Data science VS economics?

Hi all, was wondering to what extent we can expect to see a new generation of traders whose skillset are more about complex and not so complex interpretations of data over deep, and learned understandings of economics, markets and the like? Also keen to know to which degree you'd say that quantitative trading is generally going to be the "norm" - or if it already is! Any insight, very appreciated as always! Thank you. Herschel
