Glossary

Algorithmic Trading can be a complex subject. Keep your knowledge current with this glossary of key concepts, terminology, and technical indicators.

Heikin-Ashi Technique

Heikin-Ashi Technique

A type of candlestick chart that shares many characteristics with standard candlestick charts, but differs because of the values used to create each bar. Instead of using the open-high-low-close (OHLC) bars like standard candlestick charts, the Heikin-Ashi technique uses a modified formula:

Hikkake Pattern

Hikkake Pattern

A charting pattern used by technical traders which is used in identifying market direction. The Hikkake pattern is identified by its resembelance to an inside bar pattern, where the range of a new point or bar falls outside a previous point or bar. This breakout can be reflect both a bullish or bearish outlook, depending on the direction of the breakout (above or below a previous high or low).

Hindenburg Omen

Hindenburg Omen

A technical indicator named after the famous crash of the German airship of the late 1930s. The Hindenburg omen was developed to predict the potential for a financial market crash. It is created by monitoring the number of securities that form new 52-week highs relative to the number of securities that form new 52-week lows - the number of securities must be abnormally large. This criteria is deemed to be met when both numbers are greater than 2.2% of the total number of issues that trade on the NYSE (for that specific day).

Histogram

Histogram

Histogram

1. A graphical representation, similar to a bar chart in structure, that organizes a group of data points into user-specified ranges. The histogram condenses a data series into an easily interpreted visual by taking many data points and grouping them into logical ranges or bins.

Histogram

2. The MACD histogram is a very common technical indicator that illustrates the difference between the MACD line and the trigger line. This difference is then plotted on a chart in the form of a histogram to make it easy for a trader to determine a specific asset's momentum.

Hook Reversal

Hook Reversal

A short-term candlestick pattern, occurring in either an uptrend or a downtrend, that is used to predict a reversal in the trend's direction. The pattern is identified when a candlestick has a higher low and a lower high compared to the previous day's candlestick. This pattern is unique because the difference in size between the first and second bar's body is small, compared to that seen in other types of engulfing patterns.

Hybrid Indicator

Hybrid Indicator

A technical indicator that combines core elements of chart analysis with existing indicators. Hybrid indicators are one of the two main types of technical indicators, the other being unique indicators. The term may also refer to an indicator used to express the credit risk of hybrid securities.

Ichimoku Cloud

Ichimoku Cloud

A chart used in technical analysis that shows support and resistance, and momentum and trend directions for a security or investment. It is designed to provide relevant information at a glance using moving averages (tenkan-sen and kijun-sen) to show bullish and bearish crossover points. The "clouds" (kumo, in Japanese) are formed between spans of the average of the tenkan-sen and kijun-sen plotted six months ahead (senkou span B), and of the midpoint of the 52-week high and low (senkou span B) plotted six months ahead.

Ichimoku Kinko Hyo

Ichimoku Kinko Hyo

A technical indicator that is used to gauge momentum along with future areas of support and resistance. The Ichimoku indicator is comprised of five lines called the tenkan-sen, kijun-sen, senkou span A, senkou span B and chickou span. This indicator was developed so that a trader can gauge an asset's trend, momentum and support and resistance points without the need of any other technical indicator.

ime Segmented Volume - TSV

ime Segmented Volume - TSV

A technical analysis indicator developed by Worden Brothers Inc. that segments a stock's price and volume according to time intervals. The price and volume data is then compared to uncover periods of accumulation (buying) and distribution (selling).

Indicator

Indicator

Statistics used to measure current conditions as well as to forecast financial or economic trends. Indicators are used extensively in technical analysis to predict changes in stock trends or price patterns. In fundamental analysis, economic indicators that quantify current economic and industry conditions are used to provide insight into the future profitability potential of public companies.

Inside Day

Inside Day

A candlestick formation that occurs when the entire daily price range for a given security falls within the price range of the previous day. Inside day often refers to all versions of the harami pattern and can be very useful for spotting changes in the direction of a trend.

Inside Days

Inside Days

A charting term used by technical analysts and day traders. Inside days are days where the high point of the bar is lower than the previous day's high, and the low point is higher than the previous day's low. Inside days denote reduced volatility in the stock price for that day.
